ISLAMABAD, Aug 17, 2009: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Monday that a process of accountability of people in the present and former governments would soon be initiated, but there would be no political victimisation. Talking to newsmen at the Auditor General’s office, he said the government would ensure across-the-board and transparent accountability, “keeping in view its hairline difference with political victimization”. Answering a question, he said the government was ready for its own accountability. The process came to a halt when the government suspended the work of National Accountability Bureau before winding it up and announced that it would be replaced by a neutral body through a parliamentary legislation. Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin accompanied the prime minister to the AGP Office. Mr. Gilani said this was for the first time an elected prime minister had visited the auditor general along with the leader of opposition in the National Assembly. He said the government would ensure transparency and good governance which were closely linked with the accountability of public offices. Answering a question about the future of local governments, Mr. Gilani said he had done his job by submitting the recommendations of provincial chief ministers to President Asif Ali Zardari who had forwarded them to the law ministry for vetting and comments. |
