Gilani pledges good governance, accountability:

Mr. Gilani stressed the need for making the Auditor General’s Office an effective institution and said that an active public accounts committee of parliament would strengthen the democratic system.

He said that audit reports would identify weaknesses of the government.

He said the PAC chairman had assured him that the audit of previous and present governments would be done simultaneously.

The prime minister said there was no bar on the auditor general to set up, if required, more departments of accountability.

He called for impartiality and transparency in audit reports and said he had spent five years in jail because of an audit report which was aimed at political victimization.

Earlier, the prime minister was briefed on the working of the office of Auditor General as an instrument of accountability of government departments.

Chaudhry Nisar said that in the past preparation of audit reports took almost 10 years while the PAC under his stewardship finalized three audit reports in 10 months. He said the reports would be tabled in parliament after Ramazan.
