  • Wider Connectivity in PIFRA II
At the start of PIFRA II, there were 22 Rollout sites of FABS including Punjab, Sindh and NWFP. These sites are now in the progress of connectivity with the efforts of WAN section in PIFRA. In NWFP, there are three major sites like Kohat, Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan. The feasibility surveys for these sites has been completed while other sites Shangla, Hangu and Swabi are also under consideration. Due to the non-avaibility of DSL Media, these sites have been planned to be connected on DXX by PTCL.

For some sites i.e. Hangu PIFRA will adopt Radio Link due to the absence of any other wider media. The team of Wide Area Network (WAN) PIFRA is also conducting a survey in all the district of NWFP regarding the feasibility of Multipoint Radio Link Technology. The rationale behind this survey is that the Radio Links will eliminate the recurring charges incurred by hiring DSL/DXX media from NTC/PTCL or any other provider. Another major benefit of the said survey & its implementation is that PIFRA will have its own private WAN links in NWFP, which is more reliable & secure. In this regard, Charsadda, Mardan & Nowshera have already been moved in to Radio Link successfully.

Punjab has the largest volume of Sites in PIFRA WAN implementation and there are some 14 sites in Punjab that are also included in the upcoming sites connectivity plan i.e Jehlum, Gujrat, Sheikhupura, Multan, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Okara, Dere Ghazi Khan, Khanewal, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Sargodha and Kasur. WAN connectivity has been done for DAO Rawalpindi through DSL media of NTC. Gujranwala, Sargodha, Multan & Bahawalpur are also feasible for DSL connectivity & these sites will be made available for WAN by the end of this month. For the other sites DXX media is being engaged from PTCL for WAN connectivity due to the non-availability of DSL.

Procurement of the Routers is also in progress. In Sindh two sites Larkana and Nawabshah on DXX media are under implementation. Router's procurement for these said sites is in progress. Another major step by WAN Team was a presentation conducted for the demonstration of ‘Video Conferencing’ in PIFRA Committee Room with all Regional Directors. The objectives of presentation were to reveal the effectiveness of the said technology environment in PIFRA II.
